A custodian of a sacred site is a person that has responsibility for that site. This person is responsible for its management, keeping it safe and to make sure it is used for its proper use. According to Aboriginal law if custodians of sacred sites allow a site to be damaged, other Aboriginal people will hold them responsible. This can lead to revenge or sanctions within Aboriginal society and the community. It can also lead to recriminations against non-Aboriginal people who damage such places.
