The Authority is currently undertaking work across the Northern Territory in response to Authority Certificate applications. These applications seek clarity on the location of sacred sites and how to progress projects without risking damage to these sites in order to prevent potential costly delays to the proposed development. The Authority is currently working on Authority Certificate applications in the following regions:
|Borroloola & Gulf||8|
|Alice Springs Town||15|
|Alice Springs Hinterland||11|
The Authority seeks to complete these applications as quickly as possible. An Authority Certificate provides applicants with high quality and reliable advice as well as an indemnity from prosecution under the Northern Territory Aboriginal Sacred Sites Act, provided that the Certificate holder complies with the conditions set out in the Certificate. Authority Certificates are based on thorough consultations with custodians who provide instructions to protect sacred sites. The Authority relies on custodian availability and access to sites to progress applications.
At times there are delays to progressing applications due to impassable roads, custodians not being available due to traditional obligations, or the Authority may be experiencing an unusually high demand for its services.
